Susan has served on many boards and committees and volunteered with many organizations over the past four decades, including the International Foundation for Gender Education, Global Action for Trans Equality, Committee on LGBT History, the American Historical Association's Committee on the Status of LGBT Historians, the Organization of American Historian's Distinguished Speakers Bureau, and the program committee of the American Studies Association.  Most recently, she was a founding board member of the American LGBTQ+ Museum (2021-2023). She currently serves on the Scholars Advisory Committee to the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum, and the National Advisory Board of the GLBT Historical Society Museum.
